1983 was the year that market a memorable moment in the history of BMW. The German car maker proudly presented at that time the 524td sedan, a premiere as it was the first unit of Bavarian Motors to have diesel powering.

While you may be tempted to believe that BMW switched to diesel because they were convinced it was a better alternative, the truth is a little bit different. It was the oil crisis from the ‘70s the one that forced the company to make this change with their BMW 5 Series.

30 years from them, we get to celebrate not just all the successes experienced by Bavarian Motors through all these years, but also 120 years since Rudolf Diesel invented the engine with compression ignition! 1893 for this major invention and 1983 for BMW’s embracement of diesel – you cannot miss the fit.

Judging by everything that BMW did in terms of diesel motoring so far, even though the auto maker was initially forced to try diesel, it came to a moment when it voluntarily wanted to become a pioneer and innovate.

The result was the triple turbocharged diesel engine with six straight cylinders that carries up to 546 pound-feet of torque and up to 381 HP!
