BMW 2 Series Coupe unveiled

BMW has unveiled the all-new 2 Series Coupe ahead of its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January. Essentially a successor to the 1 Series Coupe, the new model is distinguished from the 1 Series hatchback with new bumpers and new swept-back headlights creating a wider and sportier look.
The wheelbase stands at 2,690mm, which is identical to the 1 Series, but the stretched boot increases overall length from 4,324mm to 4,432mm. From the rear it looks very similar to the new 4 Series, just more compact.
Boot space is 390 litres (+30 compared to the hatch).
Engine range carries over largely from the 1 Series, except the lower-spec units.
From start there are three 2.0-litre diesels (141bhp in the 218d, 181bhp in the 220d and 215bhp in the 225d). The best fuel economy if 67.3mpg with CO2 emissions of 111g/km is delivered with the 218d.
Petrol engines include a 181bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo in the 220i and a range topping 321bhp 3.0-litre six cylinder turbo in the M235i.
This is not a full M car, but still is part of BMW’s new M Performance family, featuring 10mm lower suspension, lightweight 18-inch alloys, M Sport brakes, mechanical limited-slip diff, variable-ratio steering,
0-52mph comes in 5.8 seconds with the manual and 4.8 seconds with the automatic. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. Average fuel economy is 37.2 mpg.
The actual M2 is to follow later in the future. Before that the 2 Series Convertible will debut.
Regular 2 Series models come in three specs: Modern, Sport or M Sport.
In short the new Series Coupe is larger and more luxurious than the outgoing 1 Series Coupe.
A four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe is also in works, going against the Audi A3 saloon and Mercedes CLA.
The 2 Series Coupe will go on sale next March with prices to be released closer to market launch.
