Porsche is to debut the production ready version of its 918 Spyder supercar at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Powered by a combination of V8 engine and electric power, the 918 Spyder is capable a 0-62mph sprint of just 2.8 seconds, yet it can deliver average fuel economy of between 85mpg and 94mpg.

That’s thanks to a plug-in hybrid system – the batteries can be charged from the mains.

That reduces tailpipe emissions to zero when the car is operating as a pure electric vehicle and brings down CO2 emissions to 70g/km. It might fall into a free VED band but the car itself is to cost more than £600,000. The 918 Spyder is set to go on sale from October 2013.
