The ex-Formula One world champion has caused controversy by saying he is opposed to the proposal to increase the motorway speed limit to 80 mph, and instead wants it brought down to 55 mph. In an interview with the Radio Times, Damon Hill said “I am a big fan of the 55mph speed limit. Most people aren’t safe to drive over 55.”

He added, “Honestly, the speed limit going up to 80mph makes me shudder…Because most people drive too fast on the motorway. Mostly they drive too fast, too close to the car in front, and they think they know what they’re doing. And they don’t. ”

We had the good fortune to spend a day with Damon Hill a couple of years ago, in a non-motoring setting, and we have to say he is one of the most honest, straightforward people you could hope to meet. If he says something, it is because he believes it – he really does not do spin. We have to respect his opinions even if, in this case, we disagree with them.

As far as we can see, a 55 mph limit would lead to yet more bunching on motorways and more tailgating, with drivers getting even more frustrated, and therefore potentially more dangerous.
