New Engine for VW Beetle Turbo and Jetta GLI – More Power, Less Petrol

VW Beetle Turbo

For those of you considering purchasing a new car and have decided on the folks at Volkswagen to supply the goods, you may just want to hold out a little while longer.  It’s come to light that there are plans in the pipeline to change the engine that powers the VW Beetle Turbo and the Jetta GLI, resulting in a notable improvement to both power and fuel economy.

Not that we’re talking the most monumental of changes, but surely everybody wants the best for their hard earned cash, right?

Known as the Generation 3 EA888, the new engine does not differ in size, fuel or torque.  It still runs on petrol and is still a two liter engine.  However, the current horse power of two hundred is increased slightly to two hundred and ten.

For speed freaks, this also equates to a zero to sixty time that is cut by up to a fifth of a second – not a massive reduction, but a reduction nonetheless.

There are no official figures regarding fuel economy for the Jetta model as of yet, but the German auto giant has provided details on the fuel economy of the automatic Beetle Turbo.  It claims that the new Beetle can achieve twenty-five miles per gallon for combined usage; thirty miles per gallon for highway usage.  When pottering around the city you can expect around twenty-two miles to the gallon.

There are some very slight aesthetic changes too.  In respect of the VW Beetle Turbo, the bumpers have been modified slightly in line with Volkswagens’s R-Line range of trim.  The Jetta GLI retains its original bumpers but has the new addition of LED rear lights.

There is another addition to VW’s range with the new engine and this comes in the form of the R-Line Beetle Turbo.  This differs from the standard Beetle Turbo in that not only does it have the aforementioned bumpers, but also boast larger wheels and tires, more badging and different headlamps for an altogether sportier, rather more beastly look.
