2014 Toyota Kluger – Highlander Debuts at New York Auto Show

The debut of the Kluger – Highlander at this month’s New York Auto Show, will be just the latest in a rapid run of all-new models for Toyota, following the new RAV4 SUV, Corolla hatch, Camry and Aurion sedans and the overseas Avalon sedan.

The world number-one carmaker has also recently revealed the FT-86 Open and i-Road concepts, along with the Corolla sedan-previewing Furia showcar.

As for the Kluger – sold in North America as the Highlander – the new 2014 model will replace the second-generation SUV that debuted globally in 2007, and gained a refreshed look in 2010.

Toyota has yet to offer any firm details on the new family wagon, although it is expected that the carmaker’s sharp new styling language will feature.

Unlike the Corolla, Camry and RAV4 however, the new Kluger is likely to maintain a large front grille design, rather than the slim ‘deep-V’ style of its smaller stablemates.

Engine options for the new Kluger could include a 133kW 2.5 litre petrol four and a more powerful 200kW 3.5 litre V6.

A hybrid version of the Kluger is also available in overseas markets, matching a 3.5 V6 with an electric motor in standard Toyota fashion.

As with the current model, Toyota is not expected to offer a diesel option with the new Kluger, and the next hybrid model is also not expected to get a right-hand-drive option.
