The New Tesla P85D CRUSHES The Old Model S
When Tesla’s first Model S hit streets two years ago it swept up headlines for out-dragging horsepower monsters way above its weight class, including the BMW M5 and Dodge Viper. Since releasing the all-wheel-drive version earlier this fall, the car has added notches for Audi and Ferrari to its wrap sheet of wins — but how do they fair against each other?
DragTimes answered the question with a recent round of videos stacking the all-new AWD P85D against the standard P85, and though the winner is easy to predict, watching the acceleration difference between the two is a visual shock.
The 691-horsepower dual-motor D makes its predecessor look slow off the line with a ridiculous 687 pound-feet of torque and full G of lateral acceleration, which propels it to 60 m.p.h. in 3.2 seconds — the fastest sedan in the world, according to Tesla.
By contrast the original rear-wheel drive P85 has 416 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque with a 0-60 m.p.h. of about 4.4 seconds, leaving it little chance against the D’s 471-horsepower rear motor and 221-horsepower front.
In a second video both cars get a rolling start of 35 m.p.h. and the P85 gets a slight jump at the starting line — which it loses almost instantly.
