8 GM Cars that should never have been made
Not every idea is a great one. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t keep trying, but in the case of these cars, it might have been nice if some more time had been spent on research and development. These GM cars just couldn’t make the cut
Oldsmobile Achieva
The Achieva (photo above)was a car that had a unique look. However, constant recalls and engine problems made this one too good to be true. Some models looked better than others; it had major facelifts over the years.
Chevy Celebrity
The Celebrity came out in the 60s as a station wagon. Over the decades it morphed into a family sedan. It was plagued with mechanical problems and lacked what people wanted in a family car. It was a car with identity issues.
Chevy Corvair
In the 60s when this car first came out, it was considered to be a classic beauty. However, this car was wiped out by fierce competition from the Ford Mustang. It did however have a nice 9 year run.
This is the car that Ralph Nader was able to get the US Government interested in its poor safety.
Chevy Chevette
The Chevette was produced between 1976-1987. It was a smaller car, similar to the Yugo and Pacer. However, this car was known to have electrical and engine problems. Its short run was due in part to such bad reception by the public.
GM dealer service mechanics nicknamed it the “Shove It”!
Pontiac Fiero
The Fiero was the sporty number that everybody wanted. However, it’s ability to get someone from point A to point B was an issue. Known as one of the most plagued cars on the market, finding a used one these days that runs is next to impossible.
This model has been used as an EV conversion platform by several hobbyist.
Pontiac Sunbird
Sure it had an 18-year run, but running was one of its biggest issues. This car was plagued with mechanical problems and had high maintenance costs. It came in wagon and sedan styles and was cost efficient which was likely why so many were purchased.
Pontiac Bonneville
The Bonneville was another car that was larger than life. It was Pontiac’s version of the Ford Crown Victoria. However, many people had a hard time driving this car due to its massive size.
Chevrolet Caprice
Another car classified as a boat, the Caprice took up more space in the driveway than two cars. They were not economical to operate and a hassle to work on so they didn’t last long.
