The new 2013 Ford Focus ST is turning heads with looks and performance. The five-door focus has a lowered chassis to give a sleeker look to the model with muscular side panels added also. The new sporty hatchback will attract Ford devotees but will it be able to convert performance based enthusiasts to the new ST.

The differences between the previous Ford Focus ST and the new model first of all are the looks. Ford has opted to veer away from the boxy style to a sleeker, smoother and lower feel. Ford’s signature trapezoidal grill has been implemented creating an elegant finesse to the performance enhanced hatchback. The roof spoiler not only adds to the overall effect the car delivers but also creates down force gripping the car to the road and handling corners with ease.The turbocharged 2.0l Eco boost engine combined with a six-speed manual transmission allows for an increased amount of torque which reaches 270lb to ft. worth according to Ford. 252bhp with this model allows for quicker acceleration and optimum performance at high speeds. This compared to the 197bhp from the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Ford Focus ST has an edge over its closest competitor. Suspension has been improved to handle tight corners and provide a comfortable ride when hugging the curves in the road.The option of Recaro seats for the interior offers excellent support on the torso and shoulders. The ride is deemed to be comfortable after long journeys, space within the ST is similar to the normal focus with the back seats arguably provide too little space and legroom. Features to the dashboard informing the driver on turbo boost, oil pressure, oil temperature and with a racing inspired aluminium shifter and pedals creates a racing atmosphere that engages the driver. Voice-activated SYNC with MyFord Touch allows full attention on the road. Paying the extra price from the standard Focus could create an expectation of a higher class interior that isn’t delivered.

Overall the new Ford Focus ST seems to be an improvement on the previous models and will certainly rival its competitors. The Vauxhall Astra and Golf GTI are established turbo hatchbacks in the market but the ST will provide a tough decision for customers to make.
