Birkett Relay Wraps Up the Season

Regarded by many as the unofficial last race of the British circuit racing season, this weekend sees the 62nd anniversary run of the annual “Holly” Birkett Handicap Relay.

Conceived in 1951, the event attracts an incredible variety of machines, from classic Jags, through 80s Ferraris to modern full-on race Radicals. In attempt to allow the teams and drivers to compete on an even playing field, the wide variety of power and performance levels are tamed by a system of handicaps based on years of experience by the race organisers, on top of the five classes based on engine capacity. With team names like “Ecurie PorumPhorganda” and “Green Eggs and Cater Ham” you can tell that this is an event where things aren’t taken too seriously.
