Hummer is back from the dead – alas

In the classic horror movie, there is always one final twist when everyone thinks they are safe, but the monster emerges from the swamp one last time.On this occasion, www.autoblog.com reports that AM General, the original owners of the Hummer brand, will offer a kit car version of the original military-spec Humvee. It cannot build a finished vehicle for civilian use as that would contravene its agreement with General Motors, who bought the rights to sell complete vehicles to the public.

Bradley Wiggins calls for compulsory cycle helmets – possibly

Bradley Wiggins’ celebrations of his amazing Olympic Gold follow-up to the Tour de France victory were marred by the death of a cyclist outside the Olympic Park, apparently run over by a bus turning left at a junction.

Bradley Wiggins (one is tempted to call him Sir Bradley, as it can’t be long now), said of the crash that the government should be “legalising helmets to make them the law to wear” and said that he had been knocked off his bike a few times when growing up.

New Astra Convertible at Paris

There is no official word from Vauxhall, but it seems certain that an Astra-based convertible will be launched at the Paris Motor Show in September.

The latest rumour (of many) comes from industry website www.just-auto.com which says it will go into production in Poland in early 2013, and will feature a fabric roof, rather than a folding metal one. It will be based on the Astra GTC Coupe, which is certainly not a bad place to start: the GTC is a good-looking car and has a decent chassis.
