Chevrolet Aveo to Mongolia

“City cars” are so-called for a good reason, but one amateur team of adventurers wants to drive a Chevrolet Aveo to Ulan Bator in Mongolia to raise money for charity. It is taking part in the Mongolian Rally, whose best known participant was probably Nick Hewer, of “The Apprentice” fame, who did it in an old Renault 4 in 2008. The rally only has two fixed points: a party in the Czech Republic and a party in Ulan Bator.

British GP: The thrill of the chase

Fans marched in their thousands to the banks and hills with wellies, rain macs and brollies and from the moment the gates opened at 6am on Sunday, queues and tailbacks quickly formed. It was damp, humid and muddy, but that rock steady British stoicism was in full force. Everyone looked happy, no matter if they were knee-deep in mud or battling for space on the swamped hills. Once people positioned themselves in view of the track, all else was forgotten.

As the clouds cleared and the sun even started to shine, the atmosphere changed to overwhelming anticipation. As the drivers made their way to the grid, a swarm of people positioned themselves to catch sight of the cars. Lewis Hamilton drove past to a chorus of rapturous applause and cheers, while most were out of their seats in the grandstands.

VW struggling to meet demand in the UK

VW is struggling to meet demand in the UK, especially for the Up city car. According to industry website, www.just-auto.com, most buyers are having to wait two months for an Up, and there are also said to be shortages of the Golf GTI and the Passat. The problem, of course, is that cars have to be specially made for the UK and Ireland, as Europe’s only major right-hand-drive markets. VW cannot simply divert cars no longer wanted by crisis-hit markets in southern Europe.

Maldonado and Perez: more F1 handbags

The argument between Pastor Maldonado and Sergio Perez ratcheted up another notch at Silverstone this weekend. After Maldonado hit Perez, the latter said of Maldonado “he has no respect for other drivers” and “he is dangerous.”

The race stewards were not impressed either. They hit Maldonado with a 10,000 Euro fine and a reprimand. A statement issued by the stewards said Maldonado was guilty of causing a collision, and because of the serious nature of the incident it was decided he would be given two penalties.

Automatic Emergency Braking to become standard equipment

EuroNCAP, the safety organisation that gives star ratings to most new cars has said it will not give a five star rating to new cars from 2014 unless they are fitted with Autonomous Emergency Braking(AEB). These systems are more frequently known as “City Stop”, and automatically apply the brakes if the integrated radar system picks up an obstacle immediately in front of the car which the driver has not reacted to.
