BMW and Toyota to combine green technology


BMW and Toyota have announced they will pool their resources to develop green technology – and jointly develop a sports car. Toyota is obviously the leader in hybrid technology, but is pretty lame when it comes to diesels. Toyota also has done a lot of work on fuel cells, while BMW claims to be the world leader in developing carbon fibre for mass production.

Ford Develops automatic phone block for tricky driving situations


Ford has developed a system that can work out when it is an especially bad time to take use an in-car phone and block the call temporarily. The idea is that if, say, you are coming down a slip road and about to join a busy motorway, you don’t want to be answering a call while trying to simultaneously look in your mirrors.

Are public spending cuts causing more road deaths?


The number of people killed on British roads has been falling for so long that it is a bit of a shock to find that they actually rose last year. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, RoSPA, is concerned that cuts in road safety and traffic police may be partly to blame. The figures for 2011 for Great Britain, published today by the Department for Transport, show that road deaths rose by three per cent from 1,850 in 2010 to 1,901 in 2011.

Aston Martin GTE to appear at Goodwood


Fresh from its podium finish at the Le Mans 24 Hour, the Aston Martin Vantage GTE will be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend to tackle the hillclimb course. It will be piloted by works driver Stefan Mücke who said: “I’m really looking forward to going to Goodwood for the first time. It’s an iconic event and it will be an honour to follow in the tyre tracks of so many famous and respected drivers.

The Olympics are here – run for the beaches


London is preparing to be overrun by Olympic tourists – or possibly exactly the opposite.Apparently, so many of us are planning to go abroad, London could be in as much danger of tumbleweed as traffic jams. Quoting the oracle that is AOL Travel, Alamo car rental says that one in five Britons is planning to go abroad during the Olympics. Coincidentally, BBC Radio 4 carried a story yesterday, saying that hotel bookings are down in London this summer compared to last year.
