Upgraded McLaren MP4-12C, with added drama

Another day, another upgraded supercar: hot on the heels of yesterday’s news of the >Mercedes SLS AMG GT comes news of more power for the McLaren MP4-12C. The 2013 Model Year car goes up from 600 PS to 625 PS from 3.8 litres. That means it is almost the same as the original McLaren F1, which had 627 PS from its 6.1 litre V12 – that is a measure of the increase in engine efficiency over the last 20 years (and the benefits of turbocharging).

Vauxhall announces prices for Mokka baby SUV

Vauxhall’s new rival for the Nissan Juke is available for ordering today, with first deliveries taking place in November. The Mokka is Vauxhall’s competitor in the growing segment for supermini/4×4 crossovers. The success of the Nissan Juke is leading all manufacturers to take a close look at this segment, but Vauxhall has done a good job of getting in ahead of most rivals (Ford is expected to launch a car like this soon).

Mercedes launches SLS GT

Mercedes has announced a GT version of its SLS supercar. Power from the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine is 591 PS at 6800 rpm, while the maximum torque is 650 Nm at 4750 rpm. The SLS AMG GT accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph) – why could they have not set the limiter two mph higher, we wonder?

Ford Focus 1.0 sets 16 world speed records

Ford has underlined the surprising performance of the Focus 1.0 by setting 16 FIA world records for cars under 1.0 litre.

The completely standard 125 PS Focus was driven by a team including World Rally Championship star Jari-Matti Latvala and set records over distances from 0.6 miles to 2,550 miles at a test circuit in France.

To be eligible, each car was required to be run-in under the supervision of an official FFSA (Fédération Française du Sport Automobile) steward, after being selected from the Ford manufacturing facility in Saarlouis, Germany.
