All the proceeds of the auction will go to the families of those killed in the quakes, which affected the Emilia-Romagna region.Ferrari has lined up some extremely alluring items for the sale, including a 599XX Evo, whose value is around £1,000,000, and a V8 engine from a Ferrari F1 car.

Volkswagen shows lovely Scirocco GTS

Volkswagen is rocking up to the Leipzig Auto Mobil International show in Germany with a handful of special edition cars, the most interesting of which is the Scirocco GTS, above. It’s made to celebrate 30 years since the first Scirocco GTS came off the VW production line, and so gets the same sort of paint job.And if you’re a Scirocco owner (or a particularly astute fan), you’ll note the new bumper and alloy wheel design. It’s got a diffuser and a spoiler, too, and it’s powered by a 208bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine.

Mercedes unleashes GL 63 AMG

Mercedes has had its performance division, AMG, shoehorn a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 into its behemoth SUV, the GL. The result is the GL 63 AMG.  It’s quick, it’s stupid, and it’s coming to a leafy suburb near you in 2013. The usual stuff applies here: take one GL; add fast engine; make interior a little more fancy; attach body kit; apply AMG badges liberally; increase number of exhaust pipes; connect larger wheels; paint white.

Car tax reforms under discussion

The way your car’s tax is calculated could soon change, as the Treasury has announced it is considering alternatives to Vehicle Excise Duty. VED in its current form was introduced in 2005, replacing road tax and banding cars based on their CO2 emissions, the idea being to incentivise the purchase of ‘greener’ cars. However, cars are becoming so fuel efficient (CO2 emissions are linked to fuel consumption) that the Government has started to panic about its VED revenue tanking.
